ABSTRACT

Therapies with no direct effect There are several therapies which have not been shown to be of benefit in myocardial stunning, including nitrates and beta-blockers. These merit discussion as they are important cardiovascular medications in the treatment of coronary artery disease. Any treatment which decreases ischemia is able to indirectly decrease stunning by virtue of lessening the ischemic insult, the magnitude of which dictates the degree of stunning. There is however no conclusive evidence that nitrates have a direct beneficial effect on stunned myocardium as opposed to their well-known anti-ischemic properties. Similarly beta-blockers have not been shown to have any significant benefit on stunning in animal models.47
