ABSTRACT

Numerous epidemiological studies

support the notion that postmenopausal use

of HRT is associated with a 40-60%

reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease

and a 2-4-fold increased risk of venous

thromboembolism, while it has a neutral

effect on the risk of stroke. There is therefore

no simple answer to the question of a possible

protective effect of HRT on the risk of

thrombosis. This chapter will deal with the

epidemiological evidence.
