ABSTRACT
The “Old Régime” in France was characterized by a limited stock of first names and a heavy concentration on a few very common ones. The situation began to change in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries but only slowly and unevenly. This can be illustrated by a geographical tour of France, using case-studies, starting in the south.
