ABSTRACT
There was a crucial divergence between the evolution of names of the lower orders and relative outsiders and that of members of the traditional aristocracies and those who imitated their style. While the former usually had only one name, or at most two, the latter had an accumulation of names (polyonomy), of which one might be used in everyday contexts.
