ABSTRACT

Dear Sir, Would you be good enough to let me enlarge here on some of the principles

that have guided me in the project I am undertaking. I conceive theatre as a magical operation or ceremony, and I shall strive to

restore to it its primitive ritual character, by contemporary modern means, and as comprehensibly as possible to everyone. There are two sides, two aspects, to everything. 1 The physical, active, exterior aspect, expressed by gestures, sounds, images

and precious harmonies. This physical side addresses itself directly to the sensibility of the spectator, that is, to his nerves. It has hypnotic powers. Through the nerves it prepares the spirit to receive the mystical or metaphysical ideas which comprise the interior aspect of a rite, and whose harmonies or gestures are only what envelops it.
