ABSTRACT
For European theatre the century began with the discovery of the Japanese. In 1900 at the World Exhibition in Paris, and later in major cities across the continent, audiences were initiated into an exotic theatrical world as they watched the visiting kabuki company of twenty actors and musicians led by Sada Yacco and her husband Kawakami.
