Vascular permeability occurs, producing inflammatory exudates and edema, giving blood elements access to the wound. These blood elements clear the wound of debris by phagocytosis and enzyme activity, such as removal of damaged collagen by collagenase; they induce clotting and are the stimulus for a variety of cell developments.3
