Chapter 2 deals specifically with Bangladesh reverse-clinker boats and describes the plank-first approach and the use of thin steel staples (called patam – the same word as the name of the boat type) to fasten the edges of the planks together (Fig. 4.10). This edge-joining technique is used on all the boats described in this section, but in such a way as to give a smooth hull

surface (binekata) rather than the stepped surface of the reverse-clinker boats (digekata).
