ABSTRACT

There is a long history of interest in classifying the pressure patterns on synoptic weather maps into a small number of categories for the purpose of studying local climatic conditions stratified on a meaningful basis. Arbitrary monthly averages conceal much information as to the nature of the controlling weather processes, while three or six-hourly synoptic observations usually give too much data for convenient summarization.
