ABSTRACT

The Internet has been variously discussed as an enabling technology which is an unambiguously good thing for those fortunate enough to have access, a timewasting proliferation of mostly low-quality rubbish, a hitherto unparalleled borderless source of information and communication, and a technology which simply drives another wedge between the haves and the have-nots. Whichever of these or many other perspectives we approach it from, there is little doubt that the Net (and in particular the Web) has changed the way we approach the gathering and presentation of information, and has offered both individuals and groups a new medium for the construction of identity.
