ABSTRACT

The skin is one of the largest organs of our body with a size of about 1.8 m2. It performs many different functions. First of all the skin covers our body, keeping the body fluids and tissues inside and determines our appearance (mechanical function). Furthermore, the skin has several protective functions:

• A chemical barrier in two directions, controlling the loss of water, electrolytes, and other body constituents while barring the entry of harmful or unwanted molecules from the external environment.
