ABSTRACT
Philosophy is an academic subject; it is also an attitude to life. There is a third understanding of it in the public mind: elevated thoughts about basic human problems—in many ways quite indistinct from religion. Professional philosophers like to shy away from this responsibility, but they cannot if we are to make sense of films as philosophy.
