ABSTRACT

Although probably the world’s commercially most valued spice, oregano is yet a novel target for biotechnology. The current focus of relevant applications is the establishment of clonal populations, which could offer a means to overcome the problems associated with germplasm variability. However, additional perspectives include the use of cell cultures for the scaled-up production of useful pharmaceuticals and the enhancement of breeding activities (e.g. in vitro selection for disease resistance, exploitation of somaclonal variation).
