chapter  10
Media and citizenship: Elaine Scarratt and Jon Davison
Pages 17

Media and Citizenship education have strong common topics and pedagogical characteristics: both subjects focus on contemporary social issues of interest to students and thereby stimulate their engagement with broader perspectives beyond their immediate world; both share a pedagogy that favours active and critical enquiry. This chapter focuses primarily on introducing the field of Citizenship education to media teachers. Additionally, Citizenship specialists should also refer to Chapter 2 for an analytical framework, as acquaintance with basic media education terminology and media concepts will help planning and learning to focus on, and articulate how, the Media create meaning in addition to textual content. The British Film Institute (BFI) resources in ‘Further reading’ outline several classroom techniques for those less familiar with moving image teaching.
