An international perspective on researching widening access

WithMichael Osborne, Jim Gallacher

Whilst there is a substantial interest internationally with issues pertaining to increasing and widening access to Higher Education at both policy and practice levels (e.g. Davies 1995; Council of Europe 1996; Eggins 1999; EURYDICE 2000; Woodrow 2002), there have been few overviews of the field as an area of research concern. Given the emphasis internationally on the need to combat social exclusion and improve economic circumstances through access to education (UNESCO 1998; Council of Europe 2001; European Commission 1995, 2001; OECD 2003), and the increasing concern with evidence-informed policy, this collection as a whole aims to provide a reference point for these debates.
