Issues of student performance, retention, and institutional change

The major premise of this chapter is that current higher education research in the United States has been shaped by the events that broadened higher education access in the decade of the 1960s. Much of what we do today and much of the research we conduct today in US higher education has its origin in the social unrest and political upheavals that characterized the 1960s. These events brought about legislation that changed the course of American higher education and made access a priority.
