ABSTRACT

The experience of being bullied can be very familiar, raising painful childhood memories of school or family. But for some people, being bullied is something that only happens in later life with the result that the victim feels totally unprepared and perplexed by what is happening to them. This chapter presents the stories of four people. Each story is used to illustrate the nature of bullying, the effects of the bullying on the victim and how victims of bullying come to understand what had happened. This chapter provides validatory narrative documents that describe the experience of victims of bullying and enables the reader, as witness, to identify with and to learn from the experiences of the bullied. While it is not possible to look at therapeutic approaches in depth, some of the underlying psychological principles and theories are described.
