ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to review the phytochemistry of Artemisia annua and to discuss the biosynthesis, extraction and isolation of artemisinin as well as derivatives of artemisinin which have been prepared in order to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the parent. Semi-synthetic derivatives of artemisinin, products produced by microbial transformation and synthetic 1,2,4-tioxane analogues will be considered.
