ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the delivery of pharmaceutical services to the elderly. Elderly people deserve particular attention in the context of pharmaceutical care for two reasons. First, as the body ages it ceases to function as efficiently as previously and physical and cognitive disabilities may develop. Second, access to services may be problematic due to these physical and cognitive disabilities, so the standard service provision may not be adequate for the elderly. This chapter will cover, in general terms, the physical and cognitive effects of ageing which result in this sector of the population being ‘in need’. It will then explore why access to services is particularly problematic for the elderly population. The final section will consider particular services that have been, and are being, developed for elderly people.
