ABSTRACT

The Ginkgo biloba tree is the sole representative of the Ginkgoales order (Engler, 1954) and its origins trace back to the Jurassic period. Parts of this unique tree have been used as a phytotherapeutic agent since at least 1300 AD (Braquet, 1988; Michel and Hosford, 1988). This tree produces a wide range of secondary metabolites (Boralle et al., 1988), among which, the terpene trilactones ginkgolide A, B, C, J and M further abbreviated as G-A, G-B, G-C, G-J and G-M, respectively.
