Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML)
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a disease of the brain caused by a papovavirus, the JC virus. An AIDS-defining illness, PML predominantly affects the white matter of the brain, producing a steadily progressive multifocal neurological disease. Rarely seen before the emergence of the AIDS epidemic, PML now frequently complicates advanced HIV infection. As of 1996, there were no specific treatments for PML.
