Sexual Assault

Sexual assault is a form of violence involving coerced acts of a sexual nature. Rape, conventionally defined as forced vaginal or anal intercourse, is the act most commonly associated with the term sexual assault, although other activities are subsumed under this term. It is estimated that fewer than 10 percent of all such acts are reported to authorities, but more than 500,000 cases are nonetheless reported annually in the United States. More than 70 percent of reported sexual assaults are perpetrated by individuals known to the victim, although often such a relationship is only casual.
