Although it has long been established that HIV is transmitted primarily through sexual or blood-to-blood contact and between mothers and children, a number of misconceptions have persisted about the transmission of HIV. Perpetuated largely by misinformation, rumor, inconsistent reporting by the media, and prejudicial attitudes toward the groups most commonly identified with HIV/AIDS, many misconceptions about HIV have resisted efforts to dispel them.
