Blood abnormalities, especially the conditions anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia, are commonly found in people with HIV/AIDS. These abnormalities, referred to as cytopenias, are often caused by the various treatments for HIV-related malignancies or other opportunistic infections and by the antiviral medications used to combat HIV infection.
