Among females, injecting drug use is related to about 45 percent of all infections in all racial groups. About 45 percent of heterosexual AIDS cases can also be attributed to sex with IDUs. The disproportionate impact of AIDS among minority females (and consequently among minority children to whom they give birth while infected) is clear from the total number of AIDS cases among the different racial groups. Of a total of 92,242 female AIDS cases, 17,187 occurred among whites; 39,270 among African Americans; and 14,703 among Latinas.
