The EU-Russian relationship in the context of European security


Researching and writing about EU-Russia security relations raises certain difficulties. The first is that, in thinking about relations between a developing union of European nation-states with its unique political and institutional culture and a federal Russian state, which has experienced in little more than a decade fundamental political, ideological, economic and social changes, we lack almost entirely a comparative framework. Beyond the largely positive diplomatic rhetoric about the EU-Russia ‘strategic partnership’, analyses differ widely, not least among Russian politicians and commentators.
