Trapped in past glory: Self-identification and self-symbolisation in the Donbas

Culture is a common theme in treating regional differences in Ukraine, especially in explaining election results and political orientations (Åberg 2000; Åberg and Sandberg 2002; Kubicek 2000; Shulman 1998, 1999a, 1999b). But generally, this is a macro-view, taking the east and the west of the country as opposite poles. The studies mostly rely on election results and opinion polls, whereas the specific content of the cultural resources at the regional level proper is hardly ever researched (for a partial exception see Hrytsak 2001) and – most importantly – their impact on political and economic development remains unclear.
