ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we turn our attention to the realities of working time at the enterprise level. By looking at the circumstances which exist in particular firms, it is possible to better understand the dynamics that are causing the working-hour ‘surpluses’ and ‘deficits’ described earlier in this volume – what the key factors are and what can be done about them. Moreover, it is not simply the number of hours which is a potential concern; it is also how those hours are arranged. For example, two workers with 40-hour workweeks may face very different situations if one works the same hours every week, while the other works a schedule which varies greatly from one week to another.
