Public disclosure of outcome data
Parallel to the development of indicators which can be used by care providers to steer and improve the care process (i.e., internal indicators), there is interest in indicators which can be used by care organisations for purposes of external accountability. The call for public performance indicators with regard to care providers, in fact, is getting louder. The question, however, is whether public disclosure of care outcomes is useful or even makes sense. This question stands central in this chapter. More specifically, does public disclosure of performance outcomes work to the advantage of the consumer and are such outcomes of importance for the care system?
