ABSTRACT
Peace research in Norway emerged in the late 1950s and the early 1960s from a cross-disciplinary research environment with a focal point in sociology. Although first trained as a mathematician, Johan Galtung held a second graduate degree in sociology, had taught sociology at Columbia University and was primarily identified as a sociologist. This was also true for most of his close associates at PRIO and his first Norwegian students, although right from the start, he aimed at building a cross-disciplinary research environment. In Sweden, too, Galtung attracted several talented sociology students, one of the most visible – in several ways – being Håkan Wiberg.
