The emergence and rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa over the past decade has been phenomenal by any standard and the region now has one of the highest rates of infection in the world. AIDS is currently a major cause of morbidity and mortality and at the current rate of infection, morbidity and mortality will rise further. This has serious implications for the children who will lose their parents and require support and succor from the extended family and the community at large.
