ABSTRACT

Nobody came out of the Brent Spar battle well. By any measure, Shell sought an objective assessment of the various Brent Spar disposal options. Yet it sought to keep its original scuttle plans secret. That can be seen as a display of arrogance or a prudent decision, considering the absolute opposition by Greenpeace and (initially) sections of the media to the option that the scientists suggested was scientifically and financially most responsible.
