ABSTRACT
On 9 August 1972 authority was given to proceed with the orbiter space shuttle project. The delta wing space shuttles Columbia, Challenger and Discovery had originally been given a sleek design. This was replaced to accommodate a huge payload bay for the needs of the US Air Force, which had been ordered to use the shuttle, instead of its own expendable rockets, for launching satellites.
