Barcelona, the capital of Catalunya in the north-eastern corner of Spain, is located 150 km from the French border and forms part of what has come to be known as the Mediterranean sun belt. Its favourable position and good communications have allowed Barcelona to benefit particularly from the liberalization of trade associated with the creation of a single European market. Despite a growing service sector, its employment base remains heavily influenced by manufacturing and the area has attracted considerable inward investment by multinational companies seeking a manufacturing presence in Spain.
