Computer-mediated cooperative spatial planning

WithThomas Gordon, Nikos Karacapilidis, Hans Voss, Andreas Zauke

Usually spatial planning problems involve a large number of decisionmakers with different backgrounds, interests, authorities and interpretations of some of their issues. A cooperative process has to take place, which will reconcile the individual approaches and lead to solutions that satisfy all, or most, participants. The well-tried interaction of decisionmakers with geographical information systems (GIS) has to be integrated with a framework for fair, rational and efficient decision-making procedures. This chapter gives an overview of a computer-mediated system for cooperative spatial planning. The decision-making support is provided by ZENO, a mediation system being implemented for the World-Wide Web.
