Media and the family context

ByAmy I. Nathanson

The family exerts a tremendous influence on children’s media use, shaping their consumption patterns, attitudes toward the media, and vulnerability from exposure. Likewise, the media can shape family life, including the physical location of family members in the household and the quality of exchanges that occur within the family unit (Lee and Chae, 2007; Pasquier, 2001; Pempek et al., 2011; Rideout et al., 2010). The purpose of this essay is to consider the relation between children’s media use and the surrounding family context.
