Challenges and suggestions for determining quality in children’s media

ByAlexis R. Lauricella, Michael B. Robb, Ellen Wartella

Today, children of all ages consume large quantities of media content on a variety of platforms (Common Sense Media, 2011; Rideout et al., 2010). With media technologies ranging from televisions to mobile devices, our ability to determine what is “quality” media for young children has only become more challenging. Given the historical and current interest in evaluating and labeling quality children’s media, this chapter seeks to address the positive and negative factors that should be examined and included when trying to understand what is meant by quality children’s media.
