ABSTRACT

Progestogen-only emergency contraception (POEC) – one hormone is best! Effectiveness and unwanted effects In the 1998 RCT by WHO, comparing around 1000 women given this method (POEC) and the same number given COEC after a single exposure, the dosage regimens and main findings were as in Tables 10 and 11. This study has now been amplified by a larger RCT totalling 4136 women in 10 countries, with randomization to mifepristone and either to LNG 1.5 mg stat or the more usual POEC – which is the same total dose in divided doses of 0.75 mg taken 12 hours apart [WHO (2002) von Hertzen et al. Lancet 2002; 360: 1803-10]. There was absolutely no difference in efficacy (nor in side effects) detectable between the two regimens.
