ABSTRACT

Recently, scholars in human resource development (HRD) have contributed to the conversation around employee engagement and its application to workplace learning and performance. This literature stream however is young and the application of engagement within HRD has been gradual. Building toward further maturation and application, the purpose of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive and critical overview of the concept of employee engagement in HRD. This chapter unfolds in three main sections: (a) a critical review of current perspectives and theories of engagement research, (b) the current state of measuring engagement, and (c) implications for HRD practice and future research.
