ABSTRACT
The Court of Common Pleas originated in the thirteenth century as a court which was independent of both king and Council. Dealing with civil suits between subjects, it developed a reputation as both the busiest and the slowest of the common law courts. Much of its business was therefore taken over by the King’s Bench.
