Parliament ordered the sequestration of delinqents’ estates, including those of royalist clergy. In the Solemn League and Covenant with the Scots, parliament agreed to establish a Presbyterian system of religion in England in return for military help. Parliament established the Assembly of Learned and Godly Divines at Westminster to discuss plans for the settlement of the church along Presbyterian lines.
