ABSTRACT
The concept of rational choice and the notion of rule-following have often been contrasted as conflicting and incompatible perspectives on human behaviour. A review of relevant contributions on this issue is used to suggest an interpretation of the two perspectives which allows for their consistent integration into a common theoretical framework. Implications of such integration for the study of social institutions are briefly discussed.
