The U.S. Bureau of the Census has a long history of innovation in data collection and processing techniques. Staff in the Geography Division of the Census Bureau are

Referencing (TIGER) system will automate the mapping and related geographic activities required to support the census and survey programs of the Census Bureau for years to come, starting with the 1990 Decennial Census (Bounpane, 1985).
