A kingdom divided: Denmark
The kingdom of Denmark was, at the time of its entry into the European Communities (EC) in 1972-73, deeply divided between those in favour of EC membership and those opposed. While some Danes saw EC membership as a pragmatic adaptation to economic and political necessities, there existed among others an alarming feeling that something-sovereignty and independence-had been given away and that the nation was facing dramatic challenges.
