ABSTRACT

The search for genes for schizophrenia has often been described as a ‘search for the Holy Grail’, implying, we assume, that it is a poetic and romantic quest for a single object of great significance but one that is ultimately doomed to failure. The purpose of this chapter is to show that, while the search may well be poetic and romantic, there is no single prize of great significance. Rather, there are several and possibly many prizes each of which will help unlock the secrets of schizophrenia. The quest for these, while difficult, is not doomed to failure and at last seems to be showing clear signs of success.
