Utopias of health eugenics, and germline engineering

Over the course of the past decade billions of dollars have been invested in the “Holy Grail” of biology – the mapping of the human genome. The rough first maps are now complete and published; one created with public funding appeared in Nature, and the second map, carried out with private funding, in Science. Knowledgeable commentators suggest that these maps are equivalent to having a list of parts for a Boeing 747, but with no idea as to how they go together and no knowledge of the principles of aeronautics.
