ABSTRACT
The codification of the Mishnah further intensified such interchange. In this context the exilarch encouraged the emergence of a Babylonian class of scholars from whom he appointed administrators and judges. While post-Mishnaic scholars in Israel engaged in learned debate about the application of Jewish law, the same development was taking place in Babylonia.
