ABSTRACT

The term ‘Messiah’ is an adaptation of the Hebrew HaMashiah (the Anointed), a term frequently used in Scripture. Initially in the Book of Samuel the view was expressed that the Lord had chosen David and his descendants to reign over Israel to the end of time (2 Sam. 7; 23:1,3,5). In addition it was held that this figure had been granted dominion over all nations. Thus 2 Samuel 22:50-51 declares:
