Pages 17

Compared to many areas of the world, the islands of the Caribbean have enjoyed a rather peaceful existence with relatively few major power struggles and heated political altercations. However, the region has not been free of power conflicts altogether. Even as early as the Arawak habitation of the islands some 1,000-4,000 years ago and the subsequent invasion of the warring Carib tribes from South America, power struggles have existed in the Caribbean. At no time, however, was the struggle for power more clearly demonstrated than during the colonial period from the fifteenth century to the present day.
