The viability of tourism, as the Caribbean’s primary industry, is ultimately determined by the performance and profitability of a myriad of private and public sector enterprises, such as restaurants, retailers, hotels, resorts, attractions or destination management organisations. To the uninitiated and inexperienced, the intensity of effort that goes into managing these businesses, whether they are simple or complex, is quite profound. It is little wonder that the famous free market economist, Milton Friedman, once argued, ‘the business of business is business’ – there is little time to do anything else, so you are better to focus all efforts and resources on achieving your mandate.
